For some reason I always have the hardest time wondering: how much rendering is enough? I used to say: "Until you can tell what the drawing is illustrating". But now sometimes I feel like it has to be incredibly elaborate just to get the attention of the viewer for over a second.

thats when drawing becomes illustrating. one thought is drawing is exploration, the outcome isn't necessarily known when begun, where illustration is drawing to the point, or beyond, of recognition, the the outcome.
